Stamford (CT) EMS (SEMS) responded to a 4th alarm in the city's Westside on Friday, August 16,2002. The fire in an occupied 2 1/2-story wood balloon frame house moved quickly from the basement, up the walls and into the attic.

A heat wave in the Northeast found temperature at 99* with 76% humidity. Stamford Fire/Rescue first alarm companies were met with a heavy fire load and subsequent alarms were transmitted in quick succession due to the extension complicated by garbage that was stacked floor to ceiling and blocked entry through rear doors.

SEMS Medic 1 and Tour Supervisor 901 organized a forward treatment/triage & staging area. 901 called for an additional unit, Medic 3, and special called for Special Operations Unit 91 for Rehab Operations. A callback of personnel also brought Medic 5 and BLS Unit 98 to the scene for manpower.

During the height of the fire there were 7 engine companies, 3 truck companies, a rescue and mechanics division on scene with all-hands operating.

Stamford EMS established a formal Rehab Sector that saw ~ 70 fire, EMS and police personnel during the 8 hour fire.

There were no injuries to public safety personnel or civilians.

This was the first major incident for Special Operations Unit 91, which went in-service 2 weeks before after 13 months of conversion by SEMS personnel, and First Priority Emergency Vehicles. This unit is equipped with extensive communications, 3 misting devices and Rehab supplies, MCI equipment and command & control boards. The unit was converted with private donations utilizing a 1984 Chevy C60/Frontline ambulance.
